  Papageno Resort

You feel it when you lie in bed, your senses alive with the rush of waves and the scent of jungle gardens. You feel it when you go kayaking in the moonlight, and the only lights along the darkened coast belong to Papageno. You are not just on vacation in Fiji: you have also travelled back in time. Without roads, you hear no sounds of traffic, no smells of industry, no phone ringing, no television blaring, no deadline looming. Just you and the stunning natural beauty of our island, our elegant dwellings, and the genuine warmth of your native hosts.

Each Deluxe Ocean Bure is a private, grass-roofed cabin built directly in front of the beach and surrounded by beds of exotic flowers. Each Garden Room exits onto a shared deck, and is surrounded on three sides with jungle orchards of mango and breadfruit. As for our gourmet meals, every dinner is different, delectable, and arrives with generous portions. Our vegetables are grown organically, the chicken and pork raised in our own pens, and the seafood caught daily. You could not ask for fresher and healthier dining, nor better presentation on fine china and attended by our skilled servers.

Our island has some of the clearest water and healthiest reefs in the world, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn scuba diving, you could not ask for a better opportunity. We can offer PADI-certified courses from beginner to Dive Master, dives to the only wreck on Kadavu, and diving and snorkeling trips to see the gentle manta rays and the famous Astrolabe Reef. Our hard and soft coral reefs are teeming with colourful marine life that is easily experienced by snorkelers. And guests who love going fishing will be amazed at the size and quantity found in our warm waters; experience what the seas must have been like before being emptied by factory fishing.

The heart of Papageno’s magic is its native staff. With few exceptions, our staff all live in nearby villages that still remain largely outside the Western cash economy. Our strong mutual bonds with native Fijian culture and society enable us to offer visits to the village of Naivakarauniniu, where you can meet their chief, and tour their plantations and trails. We can also arrange a visit to the local school; for guests who are travelling to Fiji with their children, this can be an amazing cross-cultural experience. And for musicians and music-lovers, every Sunday is an opportunity to hear the joyful sound of Fijian gospel sung at the village church.
